How to make a birthday surprise website with photos and music

· 6 min read

A birthday message on WhatsApp gets read in two seconds. A birthday surprise they open, screen by screen, with your photos and their favourite song, gets watched twice and shown to everyone in the room. Here’s how to make one, start to finish, in about fifteen minutes.

1. Pick the moment you want them to feel

Before choosing anything else, decide what the surprise is for. Is it a thank-you to your mom? A funny roast for your best friend? A romantic look back for your partner? That one choice decides the design, the photos and the music, and it keeps the whole thing feeling like one story instead of a slideshow.

2. Choose 5 to 10 photos, not 50

The best surprises are short. Pick photos that each say something:

  • One from early on: the first trip, the first selfie, a childhood picture.
  • Two or three from the past year, so it feels current.
  • One funny or embarrassing one. Every good surprise needs a laugh.
  • One that’s just the two of you (or the whole group) to end on.

Phone photos are fine. If a picture is dark or blurry, leave it out; a few clear ones beat many average ones. Add a short caption under the ones that need it: a date, a place, an inside joke.

3. Write the message last, and keep it personal

After picking the photos, you’ll know what to say. Aim for three or four sentences: one memory, one thing you love about them, one wish for the year ahead. If you’re stuck, start from one of our birthday wishes for your wife, for a friend or for your mom, and change it until it sounds like you.

4. Add music that means something

Music turns photos into a moment. Use “your song”, the song from their wedding, or something gentle and instrumental if you can’t decide. Start the clip at the part they’ll recognise, not the slow intro, and keep it under a minute.

5. Put it together

On Craftpage you pick one of the birthday designs, type their name and your message, add the photos and choose a song. The live phone preview shows exactly what they’ll see: a “surprise for you” screen, the greeting, the first photo, a swipeable deck of memories, your message and a final screen where they can say thanks.

You can reorder the screens, change any line of text and add extra screens for more photos or a collage. It’s still a fixed design, so it always looks good on their phone, whatever you put in.

6. Send it at the right time

  • Midnight works for partners and best friends who’ll be awake.
  • Morning is better for parents and anyone who’ll open it with chai.
  • During a party, play it on a TV or laptop for the whole room.

The link is private: it isn’t listed anywhere or shown in search, so only the people you send it to can open it. And it doesn’t need an app or an account to watch.

Checklist

  • One clear feeling for the whole surprise
  • 5 to 10 sharp photos, with one funny one
  • A short, specific message
  • A song they’ll recognise, starting at the good part
  • Previewed on a phone before sending
